Zulu Wars: British 17th Lancers (Black Tree Designs)

This small unit of British Lancers is the first cavalry I have done for my Zulu Wars project.  Once again these are based on individual bases and are slotted into sabot bases.  These are quite nice figures to paint. I am not sure I got the uniforms right.  Given my primary source is mostly the movie Zulu Dawn, perhaps I should have given them a red faced tunic but stuck with blue in the end. When I got these second hand there were nine lancers. I retained one to use as an escort for Lord Chelmsford on a command base.  The riders have somewhat stumpy legs – they seem out of proportion to the rest of the body.

ImageWhy is it that it is not until you take a photo that you realise that somehow you totally missed a major mold line when preparing figures for painting?

  1. Great work! I love many of BTD’s ranges but have not dipped into their Zulu Wars range.

You are exactly right about discovering mold lines only when photographed. Happens to me all too frequently.

    1. Hi Jonathan
The Zulu Wars range is the first BTD I have seen in the flesh, so to speak. I got them second hand. I was leery about ordering from them given some of the stories about long waits for orders or stuff not showing up, but from what I have gathered they have sorted whatever the problem was out. I want to get more Zulus and more British line. I have some Warlod plastic Brits and NNC but I am just not sure about them now that I have got them. I guess I should paint some up and see 🙂

      1. I have been ordering from BTD USA for many years and I am in the USA delivery is usually quite prompt and service is outstanding. The only pitfalls I have experienced is when a large 50% discount is offered. After the deluge of orders, supply chain is a bit bottlenecked while they cast more figures. In the end, I always get what I ordered.

      2. Have you also considered Empress Miniatures? Yes, I know I’m biased because they are the ones who make my NZ Wars figures! But their Zulu Wars range is lovely, and includes some of the most beautifully animated cavalry I’ve ever seen.

      3. Hi Roly. I am getting some from Nathan in Australia at Lonely Gamers when I get around to making the order. The British/Allies are fantastic. He doesn’t carry their Zulus though. But, to be honest, looking at them on the Empress website, I think the BTD Zulus are actually better. I will be getting some of the Empress Indunas though. I have a BTD Impi painted and based and will post it this week.

    1. Thank you Carlos. I love your blog too. That is one period of history I would love to game. Was thinking of 1/72nd scale. Back in the 80s I had the start of an Andean Liberation Army made from Airfix plastics but it got lost in the mists of time.
